Mojtaba Khamenei has been selected as Iran’s new supreme leader, according to an announcement Sunday by the Assembly of Experts. In a statement, the assembly said Mojtaba Khamenei was elected during an extraordinary session as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran following a decisive vote by its members.
Mojtaba Khamenei, born in 1969, is the son of former leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Feb. 28 targeting Tehran and other cities. The strikes killed several of his family members, senior military commanders and civilians, triggering retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Iran against Israeli and U.S. assets across the Middle East.
