A landmark report, the first-ever State of the World’s Migratory Species assessment, reveals that one in five of the 1,189 migratory species covered by the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is threatened with extinction, and 44% are experiencing population decline. Human activities, including habitat destruction, hunting, and pollution with plastics, chemicals, light, and noise, are identified as major threats. Climate change also poses risks by altering migration routes and timings. Agriculture and fishing, particularly bycatch, are significant threats. The report emphasizes the urgent need for action to protect migratory species and their specialized habitats.
