Microsoft is shutting down Skype, the video-calling app it bought for $8.5 billion in 2011. Skype will stop working in May 2025, and users will be moved to Microsoft Teams, the company’s main video and chat app.
Skype was started in 2003 in Estonia and was one of the first apps to let people make phone and video calls over the internet instead of using regular phone lines. It made it easy and cheap for people around the world to stay in touch.
After buying Skype, Microsoft used it for years, but later focused more on Microsoft Teams, especially after rivals like Slack and Zoom became popular, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Skype’s popularity faded, it played an important role in changing how people communicate online, making long-distance calls easier and more affordable for everyone.
