International Museum Day: China’s use of technology brings cultural relics to life

On International Museum Day (May 18, 2025), China highlighted how advanced technology is transforming traditional museums into immersive cultural experiences. At the Liaoning Provincial Museum, digital exhibitions like “Elegance of the Tang and Song Dynasties” allow visitors to virtually step into classical Chinese paintings. In Dunhuang, VR recreations of the Mogao Grottoes let people explore ancient cave art that was once hard to access.

This tech-powered shift reflects a national push to make museums more interactive and engaging, using tools like virtual reality, interactive exhibits, and role-playing activities. These innovations aim to deepen public interest in cultural heritage and connect people emotionally to history.

Museum attendance is rising rapidly in China, with record numbers during holidays—Liaoning Museum welcomed over 32,000 visitors in a single day, and over 60 million museum visits were recorded across the country during the May Day holiday. President Xi Jinping has emphasized the importance of museums in preserving history and linking civilizations, aligning with this year’s theme: “The future of museums in rapidly changing communities.”

By combining cultural preservation with cutting-edge technology, China is ensuring that ancient artifacts remain meaningful, accessible, and relevant to modern and future generations.
