Michigan school shooter’s father convicted of manslaughter

James Crumbley, the father of a teenager who committed a mass shooting at Oxford High School near Detroit in 2021, has been found guilty of manslaughter by a Michigan jury. Prosecutors argued that Crumbley and his wife ignored warning signs of violence and provided their son with a gun. Their son, Ethan, pleaded guilty to the shooting and was sentenced to life in prison. James and Jennifer Crumbley will be sentenced on April 9, facing up to 15 years in prison. This case is notable as the first instance of parents being charged with manslaughter in a child’s school shooting in the United States. Defense argued that James Crumbley couldn’t have foreseen his son’s actions.
