Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government will ensure a peaceful opening ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite possible protests by the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE), one of the country’s largest teachers’ unions.
Speaking in Mexico City, Sheinbaum ruled out the use of repressive measures against demonstrators and accused political opponents of seeking to provoke a government crackdown ahead of the tournament. Mexico, which is co-hosting the World Cup with United States and Canada, is set to host 13 matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. The CNTE has threatened protests if its demands for higher wages and other labor benefits are not met.
