Threads, the Twitter rival launched by Meta Platforms, achieved 100 million sign-ups within five days of its release, surpassing the growth rate of ChatGPT. The app has garnered attention from celebrities, politicians, and newsmakers, positioning itself as a serious competitor to Elon Musk’s microblogging app. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, attributed the rapid growth to organic demand and revealed that promotional efforts have not yet been fully utilized. Threads’ ascent to 100 million users was quicker than ChatGPT’s achievement, which had become the fastest-growing consumer application after two months of its launch.
Twitter’s web traffic has reportedly declined since Threads’ introduction, with Similarweb data indicating an 11 percent decrease in web traffic compared to the previous year. Meta’s Threads lacks certain features like direct messaging, desktop version, hashtags, and keyword search, which may limit its appeal to advertisers and real-time event tracking. However, the recent controversies surrounding Twitter, including tweet visibility restrictions, could potentially drive users toward Threads. Meta has not introduced advertisements on Threads yet and will only consider monetization after reaching one billion users. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, stated that Meta’s goal is not to replace Twitter and that Threads aims to focus on lighter subjects like sports, music, fashion, and design while acknowledging that political and hard news topics will inevitably be present.
