Meta says it will start labeling AI-generated content in May

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced on Friday that it will implement labeling for AI-generated content starting in May. The labeling will include “Made with AI” tags on videos, images, and audio generated by artificial intelligence. This expands on their previous policy, which addressed only a limited range of doctored videos.

Additionally, Meta will introduce separate and more visible labels for digitally altered media that has a high potential to deceive the public, regardless of whether AI was involved in its creation. This marks a shift in the company’s approach from solely removing manipulated content to providing viewers with information about its origins.

Meta had previously unveiled a plan to detect images created with third-party generative AI tools using invisible markers, without specifying a start date. The new labeling strategy will apply to content across Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, but not to services like WhatsApp and Quest virtual reality headsets, which have their own regulations.

The more prominent labeling for high-risk content will be implemented immediately, according to a company spokesperson.
