Mercedes-Benz opened a new plant in Kuppenheim, Germany, to recycle electric vehicle (EV) batteries. The plant can recycle 2,500 tonnes of material annually, which will help produce 50,000 new batteries. Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the plant’s importance for sustainability and achieving climate goals. Recycling EV batteries is also crucial for reducing waste and improving Europe’s self-reliance in obtaining key materials like cobalt, nickel, and lithium. The plant can recycle over 96% of battery materials using an energy-efficient, low-waste process.
