Mbappe’s brace powers France past Sweden into World Cup last 16

France, Norway and Mexico all advanced to the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 with impressive victories on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappé scored twice as France beat Sweden 3-0, moving within one goal of Lionel Messi on the tournament’s all-time scoring list and setting up a last-16 clash with Paraguay. Erling Haaland netted a late winner as Norway edged Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 to book a meeting with Brazil. Co-hosts Mexico also progressed with a 2-0 win over Ecuador, thanks to goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez, extending their unbeaten run and fourth straight clean sheet before a round-of-16 showdown with the winner of England vs. DR Congo.
