Major Saudi airports suffer new strikes from Houthis

Fighting between Yemen’s Houthi group and the Saudi-led coalition intensified on Sunday, with fresh attacks reported at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and King Fahd International Airport near Dammam. The Houthis claimed responsibility for four missile and drone operations targeting Saudi airports and energy facilities, saying they were retaliation for intensified coalition airstrikes in Yemen. Saudi authorities reported damage and injuries, while inspections were underway at the affected airports.

The escalation follows a Houthi attack on Riyadh’s airport on Saturday that killed 12 people and injured 309. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and several countries condemned the attack on civilian infrastructure. Meanwhile, Iran offered to help facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, warning that continued military action would make a political solution more difficult. The renewed fighting marks a major escalation in Yemen’s conflict after a UN-backed truce largely halted major hostilities in 2022.
