A Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday that preparations are underway for the upcoming April visit of Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) chairperson Cheng Li-wun. Zhang Han of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office noted this will be the first KMT-led delegation to the mainland in a decade and described the visit as key to exchanges and dialogue between the KMT and the Communist Party of China.
Zhang emphasized that such exchanges support peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. She stressed that, based on the 1992 Consensus and opposition to “Taiwan independence,” the mainland is willing to cooperate with Taiwan’s political parties, including the KMT. Zhang reiterated that the Taiwan question is an internal matter, and maintaining the Consensus is essential for Strait stability, while opposing it would lead to tension.
