A strong magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan, late Monday night at a depth of 54 km, with the epicenter near Aomori Prefecture. At least 30 people were reported injured, and over 100,000 residents were ordered to evacuate.
Tsunami warnings were issued for Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate, with waves up to 70 centimeters recorded. All tsunami alerts were lifted by early Tuesday morning.
A nuclear waste facility in Aomori reported that more than 100 liters of water overflowed from a spent-fuel pool due to the shaking, but the leak stayed inside the building and posed no safety risk. Nuclear regulators confirmed no abnormal conditions at other plants. TEPCO temporarily halted the release of treated wastewater from Fukushima as a precaution.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned that more strong earthquakes could occur in the coming days and urged the public to stay alert and follow official instructions.
