At 39, Luka Modric has signed a one-year contract with AC Milan, aiming to help revive the club after a disappointing season in which they finished eighth in Serie A and missed out on European competition. The deal includes an option for a second year. Modric, a longtime Milan fan inspired by fellow Croatian Zvonimir Boban, leaves Real Madrid after 13 trophy-filled seasons, during which he won 28 titles, including six Champions League trophies. Milan’s new coach, Massimiliano Allegri, who returned after the season, played a key role in bringing Modric in, with support from sporting director Igli Tare. Modric’s last game for Madrid was a 4-0 loss to PSG in the Club World Cup semifinals.
