China’s nine-day 2026 Spring Festival holiday saw record-breaking travel and strong growth in consumption, tourism and box office revenue. Railways handled about 121 million passenger trips from February 15 to 23, up 11.5 percent year on year, with a single-day record of 18.73 million trips on February 23, according to China State Railway Group. Freight transport remained steady, including operations on the China-Europe Railway Express.
Holiday spending also surged. Data from the Ministry of Commerce showed average daily sales at key retail and catering businesses rose 8.6 percent year on year in the first four days, while consumer goods trade-in programs drove nearly 198 billion yuan in sales. Box office revenue reached 5.75 billion yuan with 120 million admissions, according to the China Film Administration, with Pegasus 3 leading ticket sales. Inbound tourism rebounded strongly, with flight bookings to China jumping more than 400 percent compared with last year’s holiday.
