A group of Japanese lawmakers and scholars gathered at the House of Councillors to urge Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to retract her recent remarks linking Japan’s security to the Taiwan issue. They argued that her comments violate Japan’s 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, breach Article 9 of Japan’s Constitution, and undermine international law.
Speakers at the event, including former Foreign Ministry official Ukeru Magosaki and professor emeritus Kumiko Haba, warned that Takaichi’s statements could damage Japan-China relations and heighten regional tensions. Lawmaker Sachika Takara also called for the remarks to be withdrawn.
Participants issued a joint appeal saying Takaichi’s comments harm Japan’s national interests and the foundation of its relationship with China. They urged her to retract the remarks, reaffirm Japan’s commitment to the one-China principle, and work toward rebuilding friendly ties with China.
