Flash floods and landslides in North Sumatra, Indonesia, have killed at least 16 people, with six others still missing, officials reported. Torrential rains over the weekend caused rivers to overflow, sending mud, rocks, and trees crashing through villages, destroying homes and farmland.
In Karo district, a landslide buried two houses and a cottage, leaving six dead and four missing. Flash floods in South Tapanuli swept away 10 houses, killing two people and injuring dozens. In Deli Serdang, four people died, and two remain missing. In Padang Lawas, a family of four was found dead in their buried home.
Rescuers, using heavy equipment and their hands, continue searching for survivors. Indonesia frequently experiences such disasters during its rainy season from October to March.
