The Kunming Biodiversity Fund will operate under a multilateral and international framework, focusing on providing grants to support biodiversity conservation in developing countries, as announced by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning on Thursday.
At a regular press conference, Mao highlighted China’s commitment to biodiversity, noting the country’s investment of 1.5 billion yuan (about $207 million) to establish the fund. This announcement followed the signing ceremony in Beijing, attended by UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen, who praised China’s support for developing countries in biodiversity conservation and restoration.
The fund aims to achieve the three primary goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity: conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of its components, and fair and equitable sharing of benefits. This initiative aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and emphasizes China’s dedication to fostering international cooperation and building global synergy for biodiversity conservation, striving for harmony between humanity and nature.
