Natsuo Yamaguchi, leader of Japan’s ruling coalition party Komeito, announced he would step down and not run in the upcoming leadership election. This marks the party’s first leadership change in 15 years. The 72-year-old will end his tenure on September 28 after his eighth term. Yamaguchi, who has led Komeito since 2009, played a key role in its coalition with the Liberal Democratic Party. Secretary-General Keiichi Ishii, 66, is expected to succeed Yamaguchi unopposed, with formal approval likely at the party’s convention on September 28.
