Leaders of several Japanese opposition parties have criticized Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for dissolving the House of Representatives, saying the move lacks justification. The dissolution, the first at the start of a regular Diet session in 60 years, clears the way for a snap election on February 8 and could delay debate on the fiscal 2026 budget. Opposition figures said the decision puts political interests ahead of urgent economic and cost-of-living issues, accusing Takaichi of avoiding public debate. The government has set January 27 as the start of the official election campaign.
