Japan’s opposition alliance decides to disband

Japan’s main opposition party, the Centrist Reform Alliance (CRA), has decided to disband less than eight months after its January founding following a major defeat in February’s lower house election and the failure of full merger talks. As a result, former Komeito lawmakers will return to their original party while Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan members intend to establish a new party. To preserve their position as the lower house’s largest opposition force, alliance head Junya Ogawa stated that the departing groups plan to form a new centrist parliamentary caucus ahead of the upcoming autumn Diet session.
