China’s Ministry of National Defense has criticized Japan’s latest defense policy direction, warning that its military buildup is accelerating remilitarization and could make it a “powder keg” in the Asia-Pacific.
Spokesperson Chen Xi said Japan is exaggerating a so-called China threat to justify expanding its military capabilities, including long-range strike systems and increased defense spending. He accused Tokyo of undermining post-war constraints and pursuing offensive capabilities under the guise of self-defense.
The remarks came after reports that Japan’s upcoming Defense White Paper describes China as a major strategic challenge and highlights new measures to strengthen Japan’s “comprehensive national strength.”
