Japanese spy drama VIVANT has sparked controversy in China over scenes accused of distorting wartime history and portraying Chinese intelligence agents negatively. The series has been criticized for showing Chinese agents using torture methods associated with Japan’s military during World War II. Japanese character company Sanrio, known for Hello Kitty and My Melody, has also ended its collaboration with the drama, saying its content does not align with the company’s philosophy.
Chinese experts warned that such portrayals could encourage anti-China sentiment and make the Japanese public more accepting of military expansion. On Thursday, China’s Foreign Ministry urged the international community and people in Japan to remain alert to cultural productions that it said could spread hostility toward China.
