Japanese PM Takaichi submits statement over smear video scandal, criticized for denial, delay

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has denied allegations that her campaign team produced and distributed AI-generated smear videos targeting political rivals, with her secretary submitting a written statement to parliament denying any involvement despite acknowledging an online meeting with the alleged producer. Opposition lawmakers and critics said the delayed statement, which repeatedly cited a lack of records or memory, failed to resolve the allegations and called for the secretary to testify before the Diet. The controversy, based on reports by Shukan Bunshun, has fueled accusations that Takaichi is avoiding accountability and intensified calls for further investigation and, among some members of the public, her resignation.
