Japan’s Nagasaki marked the 81st anniversary of the US atomic bombing on Sunday, with Mayor Shiro Suzuki condemning nuclear weapons as an “absolute evil” and calling on the government to uphold Japan’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan is “upholding” the principles but stopped short of clearly committing to maintaining them in the future. Her wording has raised concerns as Japan considers revisions to its security policies. Russia also warned that abandoning the principles could violate Japan’s international commitments and trigger regional countermeasures.
