Japan is seeing a sharp increase in mycoplasma pneumonia cases, with infection rates at their highest for this time of year in a decade. The National Institute of Infectious Diseases reported a weekly average of 1.11 patients per medical institution as of January 12. Mycoplasma pneumonia, common in children, causes symptoms like fever, fatigue, and persistent coughing, and severe cases may require hospitalization.
Erythema infectiosum, another illness causing cold-like symptoms and facial rashes, is also rising, with cases averaging 0.94 per facility. Experts urge infection prevention measures, including mask-wearing, as influenza remains widespread.
