Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Sunday he will push for the removal of all tariffs in trade talks with the U.S., calling for a 0% tariff goal.
Speaking on Fuji TV, Ishiba noted Japan’s ties with U.S. President Trump are “surprisingly good” and said the recent U.S.-UK deal—which kept a 10% car tariff—shouldn’t be the standard. He argued high auto import tariffs hurt U.S. consumers and should be reduced.
Japan currently faces a 25% tariff on car exports to the U.S. and a 24% levy on other goods.
Ishiba also urged caution over cutting Japan’s consumption tax, saying the government must consider the long-term impact on national finances.
