Japan’s National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) has confirmed the first case of human-to-human transmission of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), a tick-borne viral disease. The transmission occurred from a patient in his 90s to a doctor in his 20s, who had attended to the patient. Despite the doctor’s improved condition, he developed symptoms of SFTS approximately nine days after the patient’s death. Both individuals had identical viral genes, confirming the transmission. This marks the first instance of such transmission in Japan.
