Israeli tanks push deeper into Rafah; tensions rise between Israel, Hezbollah

Israeli tanks, supported by warplanes and drones, advanced deeper into Rafah in the Gaza Strip, amid ongoing conflict with Hamas. Despite international mediation efforts, the fighting has continued for eight months without a ceasefire. An Israeli strike killed twelve Palestinians in the south of Gaza, including citizens and merchants waiting for aid trucks.

The conflict has resulted in over 37,400 deaths in Gaza, extensive destruction, and widespread homelessness. Israel has not yet achieved its goal of eliminating Hamas and freeing Israeli hostages. Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated that Hamas “cannot be eliminated,” suggesting a swap deal might be needed to secure hostages’ release.

The UN Human Rights Office reported potential violations of war laws by Israeli forces, citing failure to distinguish between civilians and fighters. Israel’s mission to the UN dismissed the report as flawed.

Meanwhile, tensions between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah are escalating. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant threatened severe retaliation if Hezbollah continues attacks, warning that southern Lebanon could face devastation similar to Gaza. Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed to fight without limitations if a war with Israel begins.
