Israeli tanks enter Deir al-Balah as Gaza hunger crisis worsens

Israeli tanks advanced into southern and eastern parts of Deir al-Balah, a crowded city in Gaza hosting many displaced Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The incursion involved tank shelling that struck homes and mosques, killing at least three Palestinians and injuring others. UN agencies expressed deep concern as two UN guesthouses and a WHO staff residence were hit despite being known locations. WHO staff were detained by Israeli forces, with some later released.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported at least 130 Palestinians killed and over 1,000 wounded in the last 24 hours, marking a surge in casualties. The escalating violence and humanitarian crisis complicate ceasefire talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt with U.S. support. Hamas officials warned the rising death toll and worsening hunger could jeopardize agreements on a truce and hostage deals.

Aid shortages have worsened under the Israeli blockade, with journalists and medical staff facing severe food scarcity. UN agencies highlighted starvation warnings from Gaza residents and staff, urging Israel to lift the siege and allow aid into Gaza, noting that sufficient food stocks are held just outside the enclave.

A joint statement from Britain and over 20 countries called for an immediate end to the conflict, a ceasefire, hostage release, and unimpeded aid flow. Israel rejected this statement, saying it misrepresents the situation and sends the wrong message to Hamas.
