Israeli military intercepts Gaza aid flotilla, detains Greta Thunberg

Israeli forces intercepted a flotilla of more than 40 boats carrying around 500 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers who were attempting to deliver aid to Gaza. Among the passengers was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who appeared in a video surrounded by Israeli soldiers after the boats were taken to an Israeli port.
The flotilla, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, was carrying food and medicine and had drawn international attention, with Turkey, Spain, and Italy monitoring its progress. Organizers accused Israel of committing a “war crime” by intercepting the boats in international waters about 70 nautical miles from Gaza, saying aggressive tactics like water cannons were used, though no one was harmed.
Turkey condemned the operation as “an act of terror,” Spain and Ireland expressed concern, and Colombia expelled Israeli diplomats in protest. Israel defended the raid, insisting the blockade on Gaza is legal and accusing the flotilla of being more political than humanitarian, while offering to transfer aid through official channels.
The flotilla had hoped to reach Gaza on Thursday but was stopped before arrival. Despite the interception, organizers vowed to continue their mission.
