Israel’s army asserted control over communities in its southern territory near Gaza after a surprise attack by Hamas militants. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported targeting 500 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad sites, primarily towers, residential buildings, civil facilities, and mosques. The death toll from Hamas’ attack on Israel has surpassed 800, while at least 493 people have died in Gaza due to Israeli airstrikes in response, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant ordered a complete siege on Gaza, cutting off electricity, food, fuel, and water supply.
In retaliation, Hamas launched 120 rockets towards Israeli cities Ashdod and Ashkelon. More than 123,000 people have been displaced in Gaza since the attack, as reported by the United Nations. Hamas claims to have captured more Israelis and continues to battle outside Gaza with the aim of freeing Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. China expressed concern over the conflict, condemning actions causing civilian casualties, and called for a ceasefire and regional stability. The U.S. is sending warships and fighter jets to support Israel, and will provide additional equipment and resources to the Israel Defense Forces.
