On Tuesday, the Israeli military reported that 24 soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip, marking the highest Israeli death toll in a single day of its military campaign against Hamas in 2024. According to Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, 21 soldiers died in an explosion when two buildings, mined for demolition, collapsed after militants fired grenades at a nearby tank. Three soldiers were also killed in a separate attack in southern Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that it was one of the most difficult days since the war erupted, vowing to continue fighting until absolute victory. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized that the conflict would shape Israel’s future for decades. The deaths occurred during Israel’s largest ground assault of the new year, pushing into the western part of Khan Younis, a major city in southern Gaza. Gazans reported difficulties in rescuing the wounded and dead due to Israeli blockades and hospital stormings. Israel claims that Hamas operates in and around hospitals, justifying them as legitimate targets, a claim denied by hospital staff and Hamas.
