Israel prepares assault on Rafah, seeks to allay fears of ‘bloodbath’

Israeli forces are preparing for a ground assault on Hamas in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by violence in the northern areas are trapped in dire conditions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to plan the evacuation of civilians, but aid agencies express concerns about potential civilian casualties in the densely populated area. The U.S. President, Joe Biden, criticizes Israel’s response, calling it “over the top,” and Washington warns against a military operation without due consideration for civilians. More than a million people displaced by four months of Israeli bombings are concentrated in Rafah, with Israel aiming to eliminate Hamas battalions present there. The United Nations urges the protection of Palestinian civilians in Rafah but opposes forced mass displacement. The Palestinian Presidency and Egypt express concerns over Netanyahu’s plans for military escalation, fearing it could lead to widespread displacement and threaten regional security. Egypt reinforces its border with Gaza to prevent a potential exodus.
