Israel opens 48-hour evacuation route out of Gaza City, death toll passes 65,000

The Israeli military has opened an additional evacuation route from Gaza City for 48 hours as it intensifies operations aimed at removing civilians and targeting Hamas fighters. Leaflets dropped over the city instructed Palestinians to use the Salahudin Road to head south by Friday afternoon.

An Israeli official said the military campaign, expected to last months, aims to clear Gaza City of civilians, with fighting set to escalate in the coming weeks. Around 400,000 people have fled since August 10, though roughly 100,000 are believed to remain. Gaza health authorities reported at least 63 Palestinian deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total death toll in the two-year conflict to over 65,000.

The mass displacement has been condemned internationally. The UN and aid groups warn there is no safe place for civilians, including in the so-called “humanitarian zone” in southern Gaza, where overcrowding and a hunger crisis are worsening.

Egypt and Spain called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access during a meeting in Cairo. Qatar also condemned Israel’s actions, calling them part of a “genocidal war.” Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar cautioned the EU against sanctions or reducing trade ties in response to the conflict.
