Israel deploys forces in southern Syria as intense airstrikes spark widespread condemnation

The Israeli military confirmed it deployed forces to southern Syria to prevent “hostile forces” from entering Druze-majority areas after launching its largest airstrike campaign of the year on Friday night.

Twelve Israeli fighter jets targeted over 20 locations across six Syrian provinces, hitting military infrastructure like anti-aircraft systems. The strikes, which injured dozens, were described by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as the most intense in 2025.

Israel also sent aid and evacuated injured Druze civilians from Syria, claiming the community requested help amid violent clashes that killed over 100 people. However, Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt rejected Israel’s involvement.

The strikes triggered strong international backlash. The UN, Saudi Arabia, the Arab League, Iraq, and Iran condemned the attacks, urging Israel to respect Syria’s sovereignty and halt further military action.
