Shigeru Ishiba was reelected as Japan’s prime minister on Monday after winning a runoff vote in the Japanese Diet. Despite losing the ruling coalition’s majority in last month’s general election, Ishiba secured 221 votes, defeating opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda. He will officially be inaugurated at the Imperial Palace later. The election was a response to public dissatisfaction over inflation and a slush fund scandal, with the ruling LDP and Komeito suffering their worst results since 2009. The opposition Constitutional Democratic Party gained significant ground, increasing its seats from 98 to 148.
