Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi told visiting US Central Command chief Brad Cooper on Wednesday that September 30 remains the firm deadline for ending the US-led coalition’s military mission in Iraq.
Al-Zaidi said October 1 would mark a new phase for Iraq, with no foreign military presence and full national sovereignty over its territory.
The coalition was established in 2014 after Islamic State militants seized large parts of Iraq. Meanwhile, Iranian Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani reportedly visited Baghdad this week for talks with Iraqi political and security leaders over plans to disarm armed groups.
