Over 621 people suffered from suffocation due to a chlorine gas leak at a drinking water treatment plant near Karbala, a Shiite holy city in Iraq. The leak was caused by a technical malfunction early Sunday. All affected individuals received medical treatment at local hospitals, with most cases being mild to moderate.
Many of those affected were Shiite pilgrims walking to Karbala for the Arbaeen ritual, which marks the end of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, a revered religious figure killed in 680 AD. Emergency services responded promptly to the incident.
