Iran’s late supreme leader laid to rest in Mashhad

Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was laid to rest on Friday at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, according to the official IRNA news agency. His eldest son, Mostafa Khamenei, led the funeral prayers before Khamenei and family members who died in the same attack were buried.

A large funeral procession began on Thursday, with thousands of mourners gathering along the route to accompany the coffins. Several days of mourning ceremonies were held across Iran, including in Tehran and Qom, as well as in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala.

Khamenei served as Iran’s supreme leader for nearly 37 years. Following his death, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was selected as Iran’s new supreme leader in March.
