Iran, U.S. to resume talks on February 26 in Geneva amid hardening military posture, ongoing divisions

The United States and Iran have agreed to continue nuclear negotiations, with the next round scheduled for Thursday in Geneva, according to Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasized the need for constructive dialogue to achieve a sustainable nuclear agreement. Tehran plans to submit a draft of a possible deal to the U.S. delegation, aiming to balance Iran’s peaceful nuclear program with sanctions relief, while preserving its right to uranium enrichment. Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, described recent talks as producing “encouraging signals” but cautioned that Iran is prepared for any scenario.

Significant differences remain, particularly regarding the scope and mechanism of sanctions relief. The U.S. insists on restrictions on uranium enrichment, removal of enriched material, limits on long-range missiles, and a rollback of support for regional proxies, demands analysts say would be difficult for Iran to accept. These diplomatic efforts are occurring amid heightened U.S. military activity in the region, including a buildup of aircraft at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, reflecting ongoing tension even as both sides seek a potential deal. This follows two earlier rounds of indirect talks this month, in Muscat and Geneva.
