A senior cleric in Iran has said the country is close to selecting its next supreme leader following the death of Ali Khamenei. In an interview with state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, Seyed Ahmad Khatami said the candidates for the position have already been determined and the decision could be made soon.
Khatami said the country is currently being run by an interim leadership council made up of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei and jurist Alireza Arafi, adding that there has been no disruption to Iran’s leadership. He noted that the Assembly of Experts, the 88-member body responsible for appointing and supervising the supreme leader, has begun consultations and will act according to the law.
The development comes after a joint attack by the United States and Israel on Tehran that killed Khamenei along with family members, military commanders and civilians. Iran later responded with missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and U.S. assets in the region.
Several media outlets, including Reuters and The Washington Post, reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, is among the possible successors. Meanwhile, Israel warned that whoever becomes Iran’s next supreme leader could be “a target for elimination.”
