Iran says committed to IAEA cooperation, monitoring of nuclear program ongoing

Iran’s nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, reiterated Iran’s commitment to nuclear activities in line with its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He addressed concerns over “ambiguities” in Iran’s nuclear program, emphasizing adherence to safeguards agreements and the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Eslami highlighted the presence of 120 IAEA-accredited inspectors monitoring Iran’s nuclear program, conducting regular or surprise visits to nuclear sites. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi acknowledged Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, noting it doesn’t imply possession of a nuclear weapon but raised international scrutiny due to its accumulation nearing weapons-grade levels. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, has faced challenges since the U.S. withdrawal in 2018. Efforts to revive the JCPOA started in April 2021, but substantive progress has not been reported since August 2022 despite multiple rounds of negotiations.
