Iran has reduced Australia’s diplomatic presence in the country following Canberra’s expulsion of Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi last month, Iranian media reported Thursday. Australia’s ambassador to Iran, Ian McConville, has left the country, though Iran’s consular section in Canberra continues limited operations.
The expulsion followed Australian claims that Iran orchestrated at least two anti-Semitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne since October 2023. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the move was based on credible evidence, and Canberra plans to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
Iran called Australia’s actions “unjustified” and warned they harm bilateral ties, accusing Canberra of following Israeli policies, while Australia denied that the measures were intended to appease Israel.
