Iran and Oman are close to finalizing an agreement that would establish a temporary new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz for the next two to four months. Iranian officials said most details have been settled, although they stressed that the agreement would not mean the full reopening of the strategic waterway. Iran also denied US claims that direct negotiations were underway, saying only that messages had been exchanged regarding a memorandum of understanding signed in June.
Meanwhile, tensions across the Middle East remain high. Israel carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon, killing one person and injuring 11 others, while Israeli and Lebanese officials continued US-mediated talks in Rome on border security issues. Separately, Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for missile attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, further raising concerns about the safety of regional shipping routes.
