To comply with U.S. export controls and sanctions, Intel plans to release two AI chips, HL-328 and HL-388, tailored for the Chinese market, with reduced power. Scheduled for launch in June and September respectively, these chips are part of Intel’s Gaudi 3 product line. Nvidia is also developing three China-specific chips, including the H20, due to tightened U.S. regulations. While Intel’s and Nvidia’s chips offer similar features, their performance will be significantly reduced to meet export control regulations. Experts like Zeng Yi emphasize the importance for China to develop alternative AI ecosystems promptly. Intel faces challenges such as lagging manufacturing technology and competition from rivals like AMD and Nvidia. China, a significant market for Intel, accounted for 27% of its revenue in 2023, making its performance crucial.
