Industry experts: World expects more Chinese films to present modern China

Experts at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival said international audiences are increasingly eager to see Chinese films, which offer insights into contemporary Chinese culture and society.

Festival director Alberto Barbera described this year’s lineup as a “comeback” for Chinese cinema on the global stage, noting the rise of a new generation of filmmakers. Roberto Stabille of Cinecitta emphasized that Chinese films help audiences understand both the present and future of life in China.

Italian director Italo Spinelli highlighted that young viewers are engaging with films across diverse platforms, and Chinese cinema is part of this global shift. Michel Reilhac, a consultant for the Venice Immersive section, noted that Chinese works blend tradition and modernity, making them accessible and informative for international audiences.

Spinelli added that while Chinese films focus on local realities, their stories carry universal meaning, making them increasingly relevant and appealing worldwide. He concluded that the more authentically Chinese a film is, the more it resonates internationally.
