Indonesia has temporarily blocked Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot over concerns that it could generate pornographic content, becoming the first country to restrict access to the AI tool. The move follows scrutiny from governments in Europe and Asia over sexualized outputs, including depictions of children.
xAI, the company behind Grok, said it limited image generation and editing to paying users while addressing safeguard failures. Indonesia’s Communications Minister Meutya Hafid called non-consensual sexual deepfakes a serious human rights violation and summoned xAI officials for discussions. Musk warned that users creating illegal content would face legal consequences.
Indonesia enforces strict laws prohibiting the online distribution of obscene material, reflecting the country’s conservative social standards.
