Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto said on Sunday that the country will not pay the $1 billion joining fee to become a permanent member of the so-called “Board of Peace” led by US President Donald Trump. Prabowo, whose government has committed only peacekeeping troops, stressed that Indonesia made no financial commitments.
The Board of Peace was formed after the Trump administration, with Qatar and Egypt, brokered a ceasefire in Gaza. Countries seeking permanent membership must pay $1 billion, prompting criticism that the board resembles a “pay-to-play” UN Security Council.
Prabowo, a former general, has faced domestic criticism from Muslim groups for joining the initiative and pledging 8,000 troops to Gaza. He said Indonesia could withdraw if the board fails to benefit Palestinians or serve national interests. Talks with Washington on a potential peacekeeping mission are currently on hold, according to the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
