Indonesia has finalized the regulation for implementing carbon capture and storage (CCS), showcasing its commitment to reducing global carbon emissions. Dadan Kusdiana, secretary general of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, announced that the regulation is awaiting President Joko Widodo’s approval. Besides CCS, Indonesia is also expanding renewable energy and other low-carbon energy sources. The country aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 31.89% by 2030 independently or by 43.2% with international assistance.
In May 2023, the Indonesia Carbon Capture and Storage Center was established to support low-carbon businesses involving hydrogen, blue and green ammonia, and blue and green methanol. In September 2023, President Widodo launched IDXCarbon, Indonesia’s first carbon exchange, to facilitate carbon trading. This platform allows renewable energy-focused companies to sell carbon credits to emitters like coal producers.
